Baird Creek Stewardship Assessment

part of the Watershed Stewardship Assessments initiative.
Watershed: Baird Creek
Project Lead / Organization: Tim Brown, Delta Institute

The Baird Creek Watershed Stewardship Assessment was aimed at identifying opportunities for increasing environmental stewardship among decision makers and the general public in the watershed community. The Lake Michigan Forum sees an ethic of stewardship—a commitment by government, business, other organizations, and individuals to restore and protect the ecosystem into the future—as essential in local watersheds around Lake Michigan, in order to establish the sustained health of the lake ecosystem as a whole.

Working closely with many local partners in this unique watershed in the Green Bay area, the Lake Michigan Forum conducted a literature review, gathered existing environmental information and interviewed dozens of individuals living and working in the Baird Creek watershed. The Forum then sponsored a watershed workshop and asked participants to further refine and prioritize a set of the most pressing environmental issues, based on priorities identified in the original interviews. Workshop participants were also asked to identify possible activities to address those environmental priorities. These recommended activities were refined and developed by the Lake Michigan Forum, and presented as opportunities for increasing stewardship in the Baird Creek watershed.
